MUM 061: “Best Of” # 5 Pip Wynn Owen – Birth Plans. Hospital Preferences
Friday Feb 03, 2017

Birth Plans, Hospital Preferences
I was so thrilled to have Pip from Birth Savvy on the cast who is amazingly passionate about birth, outcomes, people knowing their options and asking for what they want.
It has been a hugely successful episode in terms of downloads and also in the amount of feedback from mums that it was no doubt a certainty for the “best of ” series.
So very often discussed but never is there really a “what to avoid” or a “where to look”…. here are some tips to consider for your birth plan. Why you need one… why its ok to call it a plan and what might never be accepted if it was in one.
So as you can imagine this week is a very important message that all mums to be would love to hear. One to certainly be shared many times!! So please do share this episode and it’s links/resources with those pregnant women around you especially those nearing the end of their pregnancy.
And Have you subscribed yet to Mum’s The Word to get all the episodes delivered to your phone as soon as they are released each Friday? You can do so on iTunes.
ENJOY this week’s Episode and thanks for listening!!
PIP’S BIO
Pip is a childbirth educator, midwife and mother of four who is a passionate advocate of empowering parents to create better births.
Over a decade ago Pip was charged with the antenatal classes program and teaching at a large private hospital. Working as a midwife at the time, Pip decided to enroll in formal childbirth education study through Birth International. The study dramatically changed her understanding and approach to prenatal education.
With the birth of her fourth child, her first with an obstetrician in the private hospital, Pip realised the real need to create an independent childbirth education service, operating externally and
alongside the system. She launched “Birth Savvy – Ask for What You Want” in early 2013 which promotes Better Birthing through education. Workshops are held throughout WA and focus on helping parents get the birthing experience they deserve through increasing their confidence and knowledge and promoting an equal partnership with their obstetricians.
Since the inauguration of “Birth Savvy”, Pip has discovered the complimentary practice of hypnobirthing, and has since qualified as a Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner.
Through her passion for improving birth experiences for couples Pip has become a sort after commentator on maternity issues and makes regular appearances on National Radio and TV. She has also been asked to written opinion pieces for national newspapers.
She has also contributed to magazines and online blogs, such as Practical Parenting, Empowering Birth and www.onyamagazine.com
Pip was also awarded the National Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner of Excellence 2014/2105.

We certainly couldn’t have a “best of” from the podcast series and not share this popular episode. Possibly a taboo topic for some, yet eye-opening, and enlightening for others I am really excited to hear what you all think of this topic and this option for post natal recovery. It s a must listen to episode. Get past the ick factor
Natalie is definitely an expert in all things placenta but as you will hear on the episode, as a vegetarian, it’s not something she ever thought she’d do, let alone prepare placentas or others!
She saw the results for herself when comparing the postnatal periods following both her children, where with placentophagy she had less bleeding, less baby blues and the rest she shares as we talk all things placentas. I know you will love this episode, whether it’s your thing or not.
So please do share this week’s episode and it’s links/resources with those pregnant women around you. It’s such an important topic and this information needs to get out!
Let me know what you think and join the conversation over with us on facebook.
NATALIE’S BIO
Originally from New Zealand, after completing her Masters in Psychology Natalie moved to the UK. She spent the next 10 years working, playing and volunteering in different countries including England, Turkey, Nepal and Central America. Much of her work was with women and children. In 2009 she had her first child, and left the UK to move with her partner to Australia.
Natalie discovered the benefits Placenta Encapsulation after the birth of her second daughter. Her recovery the this time round was very different from the first time and she puts it down to the capsules. Her energy levels were high, she didn’t feel emotional or weepy (except on the couple of days that she missed her capsules), and her physical recovery was much faster. So she went on to learn as much as she could about this amazing – albeit a little weird – tradition. She trained firstly with Placenta Benefits and then with the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts. She now offers safe, certified and insured Placenta services on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. She is a proud verified member of Placenta Services Australia and also serves on their Board. She is passionate about keeping Placenta Encapsulation safe and to very high industry standards in Australia. She loves talking about anything placenta so feel free to get in touch with any of your placenta questions!

Since this episode was released I’ve had so many mums tell me how helpful the information was. Seeing as Mandy is so passionate and is a wealth of knowledge on the topic of fussy foods, dysphagia and fussy eaters this episode just had to be included in the Best of Series. Mandy also shares her wisdom around oral development and how it relates to speech and sensory development which is something that I also share with my mum’s in practice. It’s a “must listen to” episode where we talk about….
when and how to introduce first foods,
why kids might be fussy with food,
what to do about it,
clear signs for when to seek help and there are so many fabulous links and resources that Mandy shares in this episode.
I do my best to find passionate experts but honestly, Mandy had so much passion for what she does that it was such a joy to have her share on Mum’s The Word. Because it was full of gold, the episode runs over my (suggested) 40 mins – well let’s be honest, most of them have so far!! as clearly my guests are so passionate about helping other mums and its obvious we all love what we do.
Please do share this episode and it’s links/resources with those around you struggling to get their little ones to eat or enjoy food. Its such an important topic and this episode highlights once again, that we are all in this parenting world together. It truly takes a village to raise a child so please don’t keep these pearls of wisdom to yourself but share it with the new mum’s in your circles.
ENJOY !!

This week we have one of the very highest downloaded episodes of Mum’s The Word for #2 of “The Best of” series. I have had so much positive feedback from couples about this episode that I absolutely without doubt have to share it again.
Julie Sharon from Balance You shares with us her wisdom about a very important topic that affects almost everyone and is also so very rarely spoken of. How does the relationship change between a couple once their baby arrive?
Listen in and you’ll learn that we all have similar worries, challenges, and experiences as new parents. Knowing what to do beforehand and then if and when things happen is really the key though.
Julies Bio:
Julie Sharon is a licensed clinical counselor who offers individual, couples and family therapy at her private practice in Amsterdam. She also is a Gottman Bringing Baby Home educator. After earning her bachelors degree in Psychology at Skidmore College, Julie completed her Masters in Counseling at Webster University. In this first of the “Best Of” Series which is a mix of my personal favorites and the top downloaded episodes of all time since Mum’s The Word launched back in Dec 2015, I’m lucky enough to interview Jacky Bloemraad de Boer, my midwife for both of my children’s births! She is a woman of wisdom and has immersed herself in all things Birth for decades. I am so thrilled that I was able to have her share with the Mum’s The Word listeners and be my inaugral guest. Its still a fave episode of mine.
We discuss in this episode;
The role of a Midwife
The benefits of a midwife led birth
Midwife mindset
De-medicalizing Birth
Research around home birth and natural birth
Jacky Bloemraad de Boer is a mother, a wife, CPM (Certified Professional Midwife), a Doula, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, a Nutritionist, Herbalist & a Doula Trainer. She lives in both Amsterdam and Cape Town.
Jacky is passionate about fertility, pregnancy, childbirth and women’s health and is continually exploring the various aspects of global maternal health and in particular midwifery care and the continuum of care. Midwifery care can improve maternal outcomes because experience and research has clearly shown that pregnancy and childbirth care which has been de-medicalized and restores dignity and humanity to the process of childbirth by returning the control to the birthing woman has proven to be the safest approach.
Jacky is dedicated to educating midwives, the world needs more midwives and as Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Jacky has also published a book: A-Z for a Healthy Pregnancy and Natural Childbirth,
“My top priority is for people to understand that they have the power to change things themselves.”
~ Aung San Suu Kyi
“The education and empowerment of women throughout the world cannot fail to result in a more caring, tolerant, just and peaceful life for all.”

After trying to get Dana on for a while, finally our diaries collided as we got to hear her insight on the sacredness of birth. We talk empowered women, placentas, crossing over tot hat mystical realm in birth and so much more. I am grateful for the work she does, the insight she has and that she was able to share with us.
Enjoy.

Dana Lindzon Bio:
I am a Canadian Born Mother of 3 daughters. I originally moved to Holland in 1999 to continue my advanced studies at the Art Academy in Amsterdam- The Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Art and creativity were always at the centre of my life since my earliest days but when I became pregnant with my first daughter in 2005, the focus of my life was forever transformed. Nothing I’ve experienced so far was as remarkable or exciting as this first journey through pregnancy, the indescribable wild intensity of giving birth for the first time and then of course becoming a mother, a mother!!!!
This to me was true creation, and I couldn’t wait to go through it again. A real shift for me came in 2008 when I gave birth to my second daughter. My first daughter was born in a hospital. It was a positive experience, so we did not really think about our options and were planning on returning for the second birth as well. As things turned out, this second birth progressed so quickly, and so effortlessly, that there was no choice actually but to birth at home. I was given this huge gift that I had previously no real idea about, and had an amazing, life changing home birth experience. After this birth I felt like shouting from every rooftop: DO YOU KNOW WHAT BIRTH CAN BE LIKE!!!!!
I was drawn to every pregnant woman I saw and was on a mission to understand and share with women (any woman who would listen) what an incredibly positive, joyous, transformative experience birth can be. This was a defining moment in my life and the moment in which I feel that I truly became a doula. Since that birth I have been immersed in educating myself in everything I could find about birth, sifting through the current predominant disempowering beliefs and fears and getting to the roots of the transformative, empowering and sacred aspects of birth as mother nature intended, and which I have come to understand, is our birth-right as women. There was no turning back.
My 3rd daughter was born in 2011, this time it was a planned home birth. It has been a totally unexpected blessing to be able to support women in childbirth. I am now, besides being the proud, active mother to my 3 school aged children, a full time certified doula and birth coach, and an active presence in the Birth Community hosting workshops, events and gatherings on a regular basis for pregnant women, new mothers, women preparing for pregnancy and birth professionals in Amsterdam.

It was so great to have Dr Ali on the show sharing her wisdom. We’ve know each other since the ’90’s so we go way back and the episode flowed so easily. We thought it wold be good to discuss the “comparison epidemic” and so here it is.
Enjoy the episode.

Dr Alison Young: Bio
Dr. Alison Young is a mum and Chiropractor. She began practicing in 2003 in a family practice, and her desire to help her children patients more, especially those with special needs, drove her to complete her Masters in Chiropractic Pediatrics. Along her journey she went from being an associate chiropractor to being an owner of a practice in Palmyra (Western Australia), and in that time having a predominantly kids and family focused practice. She eventually sold this practice to move overseas with her husband, and in this time became a mum for the first time. Since then she has had a second child, and is currently residing in South Korea. She has a strong passion to help chiropractors be their best when working with families, which prompted her to create INNATE Child, a coaching and webinar based learning program that helps chiropractors to learn more about working with children, and to set up their practices and develop their teams to be more family focused.
Alison has been a board member of the Western Australian Chiropractors Registration Board (until it joined with AHPRA), and executive member of the Chiropractors Association of Australia (WA Branch). She has spoken at conferences around Australia and has run her own conference “Empowering Chiropractic Families” for Chiropractors and their teams in 2016.
On her journey as a mum, both as an expat and in Australia, she has become increasingly aware of the role that mum’s can play as supporters and nourishers of other mums. There is nothing like a good cup of tea, and a chat to help another mum feel that she isn’t too alone. All too many times she has seen the ‘comparison’ of one child to another lead to greater stress and anxiety for the mums and families concerned. She strongly feels that we need to compare less, and use our motherly intuition, quality healthcare providers and develop strong ‘village-like’ support circles to help each other on our journey.

Bridget Wood – Bio
Bridget Wood is a writer, speaker, event manager and coach with a vision to raise our collective consciousness through her businesses Suburban Sandcastles and Nourishing The Mother. With studies in media, communications and human behaviour, and ten years spent in the Corporate world, Bridget has an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a desire to understand the bigger picture of how we, and the world, are the way we are, and to empower people to connect to themselves and realise their potential. A mother of two, Bridget reflects that many women feel they lose themselves in early motherhood, but ultimately it’s been where she has found herself. She has a particular interest ‘raising our children to raise ourselves’, recognising how our children’s behaviour, values and needs can trigger feelings in us – our own ‘inner child’. Bridget advocates for children and awakening motherhood to see the gifts of healing our children are offering us, and how our relationships and the world around us offer us a mirror to grow and nurture our authentic selves.

This week we have our first interview with a guest on the show for a 2nd time.
I just had to get Damian back on the show again to share his teachings around stress and how when ongoing, it can lead to anxiety, insomnia and even depression and more importantly also how we can get out of it.
It’s once again a high energy episode with a bit of humor between us seeing as we have known each other for 16 years and if you didn’t hear the first (Episode 49) it can be found here which has already had a crazy huge number of downloads and needs to be shared with all mums.

Dr Damian Kristof Bio:
I’ve been in the health industry now for more than 20 years in many different capacities. As a Naturopath, Nutritionist and Chiropractor I have enjoyed helping thousands of people regain health and vitality through natural approaches. I am continually excited and delighted by the life changes that people experience when they start to trust in their own ability to heal without excessive intervention.
My path through health has been exciting and varied, and at the same time very challenging and rewarding. I love the ability to interact on a one on one basis daily with my practice members and at the same time, I love the ability to educate and inspire people to change through multi media including Radio (Melbourne’s Triple M), TV (Downsize Me, Inside New Zealand, Brian and Bobby, The Exchange) Podcasting (The Wellness Guys and 100 Not Out) and of course in a seminar setting with The Power Of Food and Crack Your Stress Code events. My belief is that both the nervous system and the gastro-intestinal system are both equally influential in the health and longevity of the individual, this is why I love chiropractic (as it deals with the nervous system) and I developed Forage Cereal (to assist the restoration of impeccable health to the gastrointestinal system).
Having combined the philosophies of both Naturopathic and Chiropractic approaches to healing and well-being – I believe that people learn and achieve the most when there is no interference and there is appropriate supply of goodness to allow the body to thrive.

Friday Nov 25, 2016
Kinta Gitshams’ Bio:
Kinta Gitsham an ordinary mum who has had an EXTRA ordinary journey through motherhood. A stay at home mother of 3 gorgeous children; Archie (8), Josie (6) and George (3). She is currently separated from her husband of 10 years Rick since March this year, however they are still an incredible team for the kids, and with time feel things will mend just beautifully. She has pushed through and survived severe PNDA for all three children, recovered from a minor breakdown, helped recover their son Archie, diagnosed from ASD (AUTISM – PDD-NOS), ADHD, ANXIETY, SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER and suspected but not diagnosed ODD. It’s been quite the journey, through heavy medication for both Kinta and Archie and with Kinta almost giving up on life. Through years of searching and never giving up on hope, she has now found many answers through gut health, which consists of living a chemical free life where we eat real whole nutritious food. Through following her ‘gut intuition’ and addressing the families extensive gut issues and inflammation, they have successfully began a massive recovery and are both off all medication and are really beginning to thrive!! She is now super passionate about spreading this awareness to help as many people as she can to know they are not alone and where to find the help and support so that they too can also begin to thrive.
Kinta’s Quotes :
“Don’t Judge me, You can’t handle half of what I’ve dealt with. There is a reason I do the things I do, There is a reason I am who I am” (author unknown)
